The Murals of Mission District

The great thing about San Francisco is that it’s full of creatives and artists that weave their craft into the very fabric and culture of the city. And when it’s done right, they turn public spaces into art galleries, available to all. Two great examples of this are Balmy Alley and Clarion Alley in the Mission District, just fifteen minutes from our San Francisco hotel. Murals first began appearing on these walls in the mid-1980s as artists began to comment on and protest social injustices, both abroad and at home. Today, artists continue to voice their opinions through their work, though some pieces are decidedly bright and light-hearted. The alleys and the murals that adorn their walls are ever-changing, making every visit unique and worthwhile. You can easily explore on your own, or you can take a guided tour from Precita Eyes Mural Arts. Regardless of how you choose to experience the murals, you’ll feel as though you’ve jumped head-first into a colorful and psychedelic painting.
